Vilakku ("விளக்கு" — meaning "lamp" in Tamil) is a free Vedic astrology app built by ParakkAI Solutions LLP. We believe your birth chart is deeply personal. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what we collect, how we protect it, and what we will never do with it.
We collect only what is necessary to generate your Vedic birth chart and personalise your experience:
We do not collect your location in the background, contacts, photos, or any data beyond what is listed above.
Your birth data receives the highest level of protection we can provide:
AES-256-GCM encryption at rest. Your date of birth, time of birth, and birthplace are encrypted before they are stored in our database. Even with direct database access, this data cannot be read without the encryption key.
Hashed email. Your email address is stored as an irreversible cryptographic hash. We use it to match your login, but we cannot reconstruct your email from what is stored.
No external database access. Our database is on an internal network with no public port. It is accessible only to our application server.
Authenticated access only. Every request to our servers requires a signed authentication token. Each user can only access their own data.
When you ask a question to the AI Jyotishi, your birth data is never sent to the AI model. Here is exactly what happens:
Step 1: Your encrypted birth data is decrypted in memory on our server.
Step 2: Planetary positions are calculated using astronomical software — on our server, not externally.
Step 3: An anonymisation layer strips all personally identifiable information.
Step 4: Only abstract chart data is sent to the AI model — for example: "Sun at 15°24' Aries in 10th house, exalted."
The AI model never receives your name, date of birth, time of birth, place of birth, email, or any other identifying information. This boundary is enforced in code and cannot be bypassed.
When you use the voice consultation feature:
We use a small number of external services to operate Vilakku. Each receives only the minimum data necessary:

No third party receives your birth details, chart data, or chat history. We do not use any analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
Vilakku is designed for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age of 13. The family profiles feature allows adults to store birth details of their children for chart generation purposes — this data is entered and controlled entirely by the parent or guardian.
If you believe a child under 13 has created an account without parental consent, please contact us and we will delete the account promptly.
If we make material changes to this policy, we will notify you through the app before the changes take effect. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.
We will never reduce the protections described here without giving you clear notice and a choice.
